Ottoman Turkish Course For Beginners
Course Dates: 21st January – 8th April
The course will provide the students with the necessary skills to read and understand Ottoman Turkish written in the Arabo-Persian alphabet. Ottoman Turkish as a written language was the direct predecessor of modern Turkish spoken today in Turkey and large geography outside of Turkey that used to form a part of the Ottoman Empire.
The students participating in the beginner course will first learn how to read and write in the old script before starting to work on simple texts. The fundamental principles of Turkish grammar and syntax will be frequently reviewed. The students will also be introduced to the Arabic and Persian elements incorporated into Ottoman Turkish. Another important aspect of this course is to familiarize the students with the use of dictionaries to solve problems encountered in the assigned texts.
At the end of the course, the students will be awarded a certificate of achievement.
The class will be conducted and taught by Dr Cumhur Bekar between 6 pm and 8 pm and require specific knowledge of Turkish language level of at least B2.
