OTTOMAN MANUSCRIPT ILLUMINATION: SEMI-STYLIZED FLOWERS

This ONLINE 4-week course by artist Nagihan Seymour will cover “Semi-stylized Flowers of Tezhip: Tulip, Carnation, Anemone, Marigold, Mallow, Hyacinths and Roses”. The course will be given in small groups (max. 10 students) to preserve the classroom atmosphere whilst online.
In the 15th century Karamemi who was the head artist of Ottoman Palace invented and added many different motifs to today’s Tezhip. One of them is naturalistic and semi stylized flowers.
During this workshop, students will learn semi stylized floral motifs combining with Tezhip motifs such as gonca, penc, hatayi and yaprak. Also, they will practice how to combine these flowers in patterns, and they will construct a manuscript border composition step by step. Students will then paint a design which was constructed together and learn both outlining and painting techniques such as Halkar, classic Tezhip and Tarama suitable these flowers.

- Gouache Paint (White, Black, Gold, Red, Green, Blue)
- 000, 0 Paint Brush
Classes will take place through ZOOM, an online platform.
