Led by renowned artist Nagihan Seymour\, this workshop will take you on a journey through the history and art of traditional İznik ceramics and their connection to the Ottoman era. \nIznik pottery is named after the town of Iznik in western Anatolia where it was first made. From the last quarter of the 15th century until the end of the 17th century\, this decorated ceramic was one of the most important decorative materials embellishing Ottoman structures ranging from palaces to mosques. Babanakkas was the head Nakkas (Artist) of the Ottoman Palace in the 15/16th Century. Baba Nakkas has given this period his name with his new styles and techniques. \nThe fig leaves\, different mushroom motifs and flowers like Lily were used by Baba Nakkas both in Tezhip and on ceramics such as bowls\, jugs\, and vases. \nDuring this workshop\, you will first be introduced to all the materials and their uses. After becoming acquainted with the materials\, you will be shown painting techniques in the Baba Nakkash style and will paint your own Turkish Coffee Cup which can be used as espresso cup as well. \nAssessment / Outcome \nParticipants will receive feedback throughout the workshop and paint their own cup with saucer accordingly. Following the class\, the instructor will glaze and fire the finished works in a kiln. The attendees will be able to collect their work from the Yunus Emre Institute London once they are ready. \nMethods of Teaching \nThe course will be taught according to the traditional training and the educational model used in Istanbul\, which has remained largely unchanged for hundreds of years. \nRequired Equipment & Materials \nAll materials will be provided by the Institute. \nDisclaimer \n\nPlease understand\, whilst every care is taken in firing your work\, ceramics can be subject to cracking during firing.\nThe course is primarily taught in English\, but some terminology may be in Turkish.
