They will first draw and paint the figures with acetate films before assembling the pieces with fishlines and rods to create the puppets from scratch. Once they finish assembling the puppets\, participants will have the opportunity to test and use them on the shadow play stage. \nThis workshop assists young learners in developing their confidence as well as their creativity\, dexterity\, oracy\, and decision-making abilities. It allows families to spend quality time together\, bonding and getting to know one another better by participating in a hands-on\, creative and enjoyable session. \nAssessment / Outcome\nBy participating in our Karagöz & Hacivat Puppet-Making Workshop\, each participant will receive a deeper understanding of Turkish culture and the traditional art of shadow puppetry. You will have the opportunity to unleash your creativity by crafting and taking home your personalized Karagöz & Hacivat puppet. As a result\, you’ll leave with lasting memories of a unique cultural experience and a cherished handmade keepsake\, all while allowing families to spend quality time together. \nMethods of Teaching\nOur Karagöz & Hacivat performer Mengü Türk will focus on the century’s old performance conventions from Turkish shadow play tradition. In the first half of the workshop\, students will be introduced to a brief history of Turkish shadow play and observe some puppets from Karagöz & Hacivat plays. The students will be given acetate films to draw and paint their own Karagöz & Hacivat figures. Then\, by the help of fishlines and rods\, they will create their own puppets. \nRequired Equipment & Materials\nAll materials will be provided by the Institute. \nDisclaimer\nThe workshop is taught in English\, but some terminology used may be in Turkish. \nAs this is a craft workshop\, the children will be using scissors to make their own puppets\, and it is the responsibility of the accompanying adults to ensure that the scissors are being used safely. All crafts and activities should be supervised by an adult. \nWe recommend you wear comfortable clothes. \nIt is recommended to always take safety precautions when performing crafts and activities. \nDue to the risk of allergens\, we will not be providing any food or snacks during the workshop. We advise that parents bring their own food for their kids. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. \nPlease note filming and photography will be taking place throughout this event\, and may be used for promotional and archival purposes.
