DESCRIPTION:Supported by Yunus Emre Enstitüsü\, and presented by P21 Gallery Posters to the Olive Tree of Exile\, a solo exhibition by Turkish artist A. Yusuf Aygeç\, will be on view from 15 to 30 January 2026 at P21 Gallery\, 21-27 Chalton Street\, London NW1 1JD\, UK. Curated by Samed Karagöz\, the exhibition foregrounds the power of art to preserve memory and bear witness—particularly in the aftermath of Israel’s relentless attacks on Gaza since October 2023\, destruction widely described by international human rights organisations as “genocidal in nature.” \nIn Aygeç’s works\, the line itself touches the fragile layers of both personal and collective memory. Displacement\, loss\, mourning\, and resistance emerge not as direct representations of violence\, but as a quiet\, resonant light shaping the artist’s aesthetic language. \nEach drawing becomes a letter—not addressed to an individual\, but to the olive tree\, a symbol of endurance and resistance throughout the histories of the Mediterranean and Palestine. This conceptual framework is also reflected clearly in the texts accompanying the exhibition. \nSince October 2023\, Gaza has witnessed the destruction of entire neighbourhoods\, the displacement of hundreds of thousands\, and the systematic targeting of civilians. This period has been defined by many across the international community as a crime against humanity and an act of genocide. \nAygeç’s works do not attempt to visually recreate this devastation; instead\, they make visible the psychological and emotional reverberations of such rupture. The drawings stand as a visual archive against erasure—an aesthetic field of resistance that insists on remembering when forgetting becomes a political tool. \nMany works echo lines from the poetry of Mahmoud Darwish\, the Palestinian “national poet.” Throughout the exhibition\, these verses resonate like wind passing through branches\, creating a subtle memory-line between Darwish’s words and Aygeç’s images. \nPosters to the Olive Tree of Exile underscores the role of art as an ethical space of witnessing in the face of the ongoing humanitarian disaster resulting from Israel’s attacks on Gaza after 2023. DESCRIPTION:Traces of Memory\, an exhibition that opens a quiet dialogue between memory\, time\, and inner experience. \nTraces of Memory is a solo exhibition by Prof. Dr Lütfü Kaplanoğlu\, taking place between 19 January and 6 February 2026\, and organised by the Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London\, with curatorial support from GOYA. Curated by Yaman Pakdil\, the exhibition brings together a series of works that explore the fragile boundaries between memory\, time\, and the human inner world through a contemporary artistic language. \nKaplanoğlu’s paintings are centred around solitary figures\, always seen from behind. These figures are not anonymous bodies\, nor do they seek to define identity. Instead\, they function as thresholds\, inviting viewers into an interior landscape shaped by sensation rather than narrative. Memory here does not return as a complete image\, but as fragments: a colour\, a gesture\, a feeling that quietly resurfaces. \nWhat distinguishes Kaplanoğlu’s work is the way the viewer becomes a silent participant. As the distance between subject and observer gradually dissolves\, attention shifts inward. One begins by looking at the figure\, and almost without noticing\, begins to look at oneself. In this sense\, memory becomes the medium through which the works are experienced. \nThe exhibition’s curatorial framework draws on the idea of memory as a soft\, malleable material\, something that bends\, compresses\, and reshapes itself over time\, much like memory foam. Building on this idea\, Traces of Memory extends beyond the painted surface through a participatory installation titled The Memory Wall. Visitors are invited to leave a single word in response to the works\, capturing whatever the paintings awaken within them. \nAs the exhibition unfolds\, these words accumulate\, overlap\, and sometimes contradict one another\, forming a collective emotional topography shaped by individual traces. In this way\, the viewers become an integral part of the exhibition\, completing a living archive of shared remembrance. \nTraces of Memory invites audiences to reflect on how memory is formed\, carried\, and quietly sustained\, and how the most enduring impressions are often those we can only approach indirectly. \nThe exhibition opening reception will take place on 19 January 2026.
