SUMMARY:Film Screening: Kodokushi by Ensar Altay
DESCRIPTION:🎬 Join Us for the Opening of the 2025 Film Screening Series! 🎬 \n📍 10 Maple Street\, W1T 5HA\n🗓 11 April 2025 | 7 PM(Film starts promptly at 7 PM)\n🎞 Exclusive Screening: “Kodokushi” (w/ English subtitles) \nThe opening event of our 2025 Film Screening Series\, featuring an exclusive presentation of the acclaimed documentary “Kodokushi”. \nJoin us at Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London on 11 April 2025\, at 7 PM\, for the opening event of our 2025 Film Screening Series\, featuring an exclusive presentation of the acclaimed documentary “Kodokushi” directed by Ensar Altay. \nKODOKUSHI Directed by Ensar Altay Turkey\, 2020 Documentary\, 88 minutes \n“Kodokushi” provides a compelling and intimate glimpse into the growing phenomenon of isolated deaths in contemporary society. Norihito\, who works at a company tasked with cleaning the homes of those who have died unnoticed\, becomes profoundly impacted by the loneliness and forgotten lives he encounters daily. These experiences provoke a deep reflection on his own existence\, relationships\, and past choices\, pushing him to grapple with profound questions about human connectivity and isolation. \nInterwoven with Norihito’s introspective journey is the story of elderly Muramatsu\, who finds himself increasingly disconnected from society and struggling to rediscover a meaningful reason to continue his life. Through the interlacing of these deeply personal narratives\, the documentary delicately highlights the universal need for companionship\, compassion\, and understanding in a rapidly changing world. \nThis powerful documentary blends sensitive storytelling with striking cinematography\, capturing the emotional and societal dimensions of solitude. “Kodokushi” invites viewers not only to witness but also to thoughtfully engage with the silent epidemic of loneliness that affects many communities globally. \n \n\n\nAbout the Director:\nBorn in Türkiye\, Ensar Altay pursued his education at the London Film Academy. Between 2012 and 2020\, he dedicated himself to creating television documentaries spanning diverse nations for various TV channels. His notable contribution includes the release of his first feature documentary\, “Kodokushi\,” a film that sheds light on the phenomenon of lonely deaths in Japan. \n\n\n\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES\nPlease be advised that filming and/or photography will be taking place at the event for the purposes of archiving\, marketing\, and all other publications. This event is proudly organised in collaboration with Saqi Books and Profile Books and will feature a talk and book signing with co-editor Matthew Teller. \n“Daybreak in Gaza\,” edited by Mahmoud Muna and Matthew Teller and featuring contributions from Juliette Touma and Jayyab Abusafia\, provides a compelling narrative of Gaza\, a place often reduced to mere statistics in global discourse. This collection offers a unique vantage into the lives of its people—artists\, acrobats\, doctors\, students\, shopkeepers\, and teachers—who narrate stories of love\, life\, loss\, and survival against the backdrop of Gaza’s rich cultural heritage and tumultuous history. \nThe book not only documents but celebrates the unyielding spirit of Gaza’s people\, showcasing the diversity of their experiences and the richness of their cultural expressions. This record serves as a powerful testament to their indomitable spirit and a resistance to the erasure of their cultural identity. \nThe evening will consist of a panel discussion with co-editor Matthew Teller providing insights into the process of compiling these stories and the importance of preserving such narratives in the face of adversity. A question and answer session will follow\, offering attendees the opportunity to delve deeper into the themes of the book. \nFollowing the discussion\, there will be a book signing session with Matthew Teller. Additionally\, copies of Teller’s “Nine Quarters of Jerusalem” will also be available for purchase\, provided in collaboration with Profile Books. \nThis event offers a unique opportunity for anyone interested in understanding more about the Middle Eastern cultural landscape and the enduring human spirit in the face of challenges. \nThis talk forms part of the Arts & Culture Lecture Series organised by Yunus Emre Institute London since 2017. \nFor more information on the event\, please email us at londra@yee.org.tr\n \nIMPORTANT NOTES \nPlease note that this event is first come first served and may be overbooked. This path not only transformed her Western-trained approach to music but also opened new ways of understanding the intricate microtonal structures and rich cultural layers of Turkish musical traditions. Through her artistry\, Audrey reveals how music serves as a profound medium for connection and insight. \nA scholar and artist of remarkable depth\, Audrey has dedicated nearly a decade to mastering meşk\, the time-honoured Turkish tradition of oral transmission in music. Her journey has been one of unlearning and relearning—a profound retraining of her Western-trained ears to perceive and perform the delicate microtonal nuances of Turkish melodies. Beyond technique\, this path has fostered cultural understanding\, revealing music’s power as both a universal and deeply personal language. \nAudrey’s artistry is informed by her unique ability to intertwine rigorous academic inquiry with emotive performance. Her collaborations span cultures and genres\, making her not only a virtuoso but also a thoughtful advocate for music as a medium of connection. Her work invites audiences to consider not just what they hear\, but how they listen. \nThe evening will conclude with a Q&A session\, an opportunity for the audience to engage directly with Audrey\, deepening the connection between her music\, her story\, and those who listen. \n\n\n\n\nThis talk forms part of the Arts & Culture Lecture Series organised by Yunus Emre Institute London since 2017. \nFor more information on the event\, please visit Yunus Emre Institute London’s Website: https://yeelondon.org.uk/ or email us at londra@yee.org.tr \n  \nIMPORTANT NOTES\nPlease note that this event is first come first served and may be overbooked. Following the class\, the instructor will glaze and fire the finished works in a kiln. The attendees will be able to collect their work from the Yunus Emre Institute London once they are ready. \nMethods of Teaching: \nThe course will be taught according to the traditional training and the educational model used in Istanbul\, which has remained largely unchanged for hundreds of years. \nRequired Equipment & Materials \nAll materials will be provided by the Institute. \nTransfer Details for Bank Payment \nBank Name: Metro Bank Tottenham Court Road \nAccount Name: Yunus Emre Institute \nSort Code: 23-05-80 \nAccount Number: 21902772 \nReference: Your Full Name \nMake sure to use your full name as the reference to ensure your payment is processed correctly. \nDisclaimer : \nThe course is taught in English\, but some terminology used may be in Turkish.
