This event is proudly organised in collaboration with Saqi Books and Profile Books and will feature a talk and book signing with co-editor Matthew Teller. \n“Daybreak in Gaza\,” edited by Mahmoud Muna and Matthew Teller and featuring contributions from Juliette Touma and Jayyab Abusafia\, provides a compelling narrative of Gaza\, a place often reduced to mere statistics in global discourse. This collection offers a unique vantage into the lives of its people—artists\, acrobats\, doctors\, students\, shopkeepers\, and teachers—who narrate stories of love\, life\, loss\, and survival against the backdrop of Gaza’s rich cultural heritage and tumultuous history. \nThe book not only documents but celebrates the unyielding spirit of Gaza’s people\, showcasing the diversity of their experiences and the richness of their cultural expressions. This record serves as a powerful testament to their indomitable spirit and a resistance to the erasure of their cultural identity. \nThe evening will consist of a panel discussion with co-editor Matthew Teller providing insights into the process of compiling these stories and the importance of preserving such narratives in the face of adversity. A question and answer session will follow\, offering attendees the opportunity to delve deeper into the themes of the book. \nFollowing the discussion\, there will be a book signing session with Matthew Teller. Additionally\, copies of Teller’s “Nine Quarters of Jerusalem” will also be available for purchase\, provided in collaboration with Profile Books. \nThis event offers a unique opportunity for anyone interested in understanding more about the Middle Eastern cultural landscape and the enduring human spirit in the face of challenges. \nThis talk forms part of the Arts & Culture Lecture Series organised by Yunus Emre Institute London since 2017. \nFor more information on the event\, please email us at londra@yee.org.tr\n \nIMPORTANT NOTES \nPlease note that this event is first come first served and may be overbooked. DESCRIPTION:[vc_btn title=”Click Here to Register” color=”purple” size=”lg” align=”left” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.eventbrite.co.uk%2Fe%2Ftalkmini-concert-a-violinists-journey-into-turkish-musicaudrey-wozniak-tickets-1099977695899%3Faff%3Doddtdtcreator|title:Click%20Here%20to%20Register|target:_blank”] \nJoin us at Yunus Emre Institute London on 5 December 2024\, at 7 PM\, for an evening with Harvard-trained ethnomusicologist and violinist Audrey Wozniak\, whose work redefines the boundaries of musical and cultural exploration. \nAudrey’s journey into meşk\, the traditional Turkish method of oral transmission\, spans nearly a decade of deep engagement with master teachers in Türkiye. This path not only transformed her Western-trained approach to music but also opened new ways of understanding the intricate microtonal structures and rich cultural layers of Turkish musical traditions. Through her artistry\, Audrey reveals how music serves as a profound medium for connection and insight. \nA scholar and artist of remarkable depth\, Audrey has dedicated nearly a decade to mastering meşk\, the time-honoured Turkish tradition of oral transmission in music. Her journey has been one of unlearning and relearning—a profound retraining of her Western-trained ears to perceive and perform the delicate microtonal nuances of Turkish melodies. Beyond technique\, this path has fostered cultural understanding\, revealing music’s power as both a universal and deeply personal language. \nAudrey’s artistry is informed by her unique ability to intertwine rigorous academic inquiry with emotive performance. Her collaborations span cultures and genres\, making her not only a virtuoso but also a thoughtful advocate for music as a medium of connection. Her work invites audiences to consider not just what they hear\, but how they listen. \nThe evening will conclude with a Q&A session\, an opportunity for the audience to engage directly with Audrey\, deepening the connection between her music\, her story\, and those who listen. \n\n\n\n\nThis talk forms part of the Arts & Culture Lecture Series organised by Yunus Emre Institute London since 2017. \nFor more information on the event\, please visit Yunus Emre Institute London’s Website: https://yeelondon.org.uk/ or email us at londra@yee.org.tr \n  \nIMPORTANT NOTES\nPlease note that this event is first come first served and may be overbooked. SUMMARY:Young Scholars: Health services in Turkish culture
DESCRIPTION:[vc_btn title=”Click Here to Register” color=”success” size=”lg” align=”left” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Faliyesonsuz.eventbrite.co.uk|title:Click%20Here%20to%20Register|target:_blank”] \nYunus Emre Institute London is delighted to announce its upcoming Young Scholar Seminar Series talk: “Health Services in Turkish Culture: From the Ottoman Empire to the present day\,” by Dr. Aliye Asli Sonsuz. The talk will take place on Thursday\, October 10\, 2024\, at 7 pm UK time. \nHealth services in Turkish culture: from the Ottoman Empire to the present day \nThe words of Sheikh Edebali\, the leader of the Ahi organization and the mentor of Osman Bey\, who is the founder of the Ottoman Empire\, show us the importance given to health by the states in Turkish culture and the role it plays. \n“Let the people live so that the state may live.” \nIn Turkish culture\, the state is always seen as a father. This view is recognized as a paternalistic approach in political science. The father is a powerful figure who meets our basic needs and protects us. In Europe\, the state assuming responsibility for health is still relatively new. In Europe\, just at the beginning of the 20th century\, health started to be seen as a state service and responsibility. In these countries\, the movement initiated by Bismarck in Germany in 1883 and Lord Beveridge in the UK in 1942 can be considered the beginning. \nIn this talk\, we will briefly look at the structure of health services in Turkish culture and the role of the state from the Ottoman period to the present day. In fact\, we will evaluate the health policies of the Ottoman period\, the Republican period and today\, each of which is a separate subject. \nDr. Aliye Asli Sonsuz\, is a TUBITAK scholar at Greenwich University in London as a visiting researcher. She conducts her study in the field of health economics and policies. She is also faculty member of the Health Sciences and board member of Health Systems and Policies Application and Research Center (SASPAM) at Istanbul Medipol University. She received her Phd. from Istanbul Medipol University and master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Ankara University in the field of Health Management. During her career\, she worked for Marmara/Hacettepe Universities and the Turkish Red Crescent as an administrator. \nDate: Thursday 10th October 2024\nTime: 7 pm\nVenue: Yunus Emre Institute London\, 10 Maple Street\, London\, W1T 5HA \nTraditional Turkish Refreshments will be served. \nAdmission is FREE but registration*** is ESSENTIAL via Eventbrite.

This unique musical event promises to be a feast for the senses and will take place on the 27th of July 2024\, starting at 6 PM. \nThe recital will feature the Ney\, a traditional instrument that is the heart and soul of Sufi music. The Ney’s hauntingly beautiful sound has the power to transport listeners to another realm\, making them feel as if they are on a spiritual journey. \nMurat Ferhat Yegül’s deep understanding of the Ney and his ability to bring out its rich\, melodic tones make his performances a must-see for any music lover. The performance will begin with a Ney Taksim\, a traditional solo improvisation that sets the mood for the Mevlevi Ayin\, a Sufi ceremony. This will be followed by a selection of pieces that showcase Ney’s versatility and the depth of Sufi music. Khaled Hakim will accompany on the Bendir\, adding a rhythmic layer to the melodic flow of the Ney. \nThis midsummer night’s dream will be like a voyage in Sufi waters\, offering music that is as dreamlike as it is profound.
