This path not only transformed her Western-trained approach to music but also opened new ways of understanding the intricate microtonal structures and rich cultural layers of Turkish musical traditions. Through her artistry\, Audrey reveals how music serves as a profound medium for connection and insight. \nA scholar and artist of remarkable depth\, Audrey has dedicated nearly a decade to mastering meşk\, the time-honoured Turkish tradition of oral transmission in music. Her journey has been one of unlearning and relearning—a profound retraining of her Western-trained ears to perceive and perform the delicate microtonal nuances of Turkish melodies. Beyond technique\, this path has fostered cultural understanding\, revealing music’s power as both a universal and deeply personal language. \nAudrey’s artistry is informed by her unique ability to intertwine rigorous academic inquiry with emotive performance. Her collaborations span cultures and genres\, making her not only a virtuoso but also a thoughtful advocate for music as a medium of connection. Her work invites audiences to consider not just what they hear\, but how they listen. \nThe evening will conclude with a Q&A session\, an opportunity for the audience to engage directly with Audrey\, deepening the connection between her music\, her story\, and those who listen. \n\n\n\n\nThis talk forms part of the Arts & Culture Lecture Series organised by Yunus Emre Institute London since 2017. \nFor more information on the event\, please visit Yunus Emre Institute London’s Website: https://yeelondon.org.uk/ or email us at londra@yee.org.tr \n  \nIMPORTANT NOTES\nPlease note that this event is first come first served and may be overbooked. SUMMARY:Young Scholars: Health services in Turkish culture
DESCRIPTION:[vc_btn title=”Click Here to Register” color=”success” size=”lg” align=”left” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Faliyesonsuz.eventbrite.co.uk|title:Click%20Here%20to%20Register|target:_blank”] \nYunus Emre Institute London is delighted to announce its upcoming Young Scholar Seminar Series talk: “Health Services in Turkish Culture: From the Ottoman Empire to the present day\,” by Dr. Aliye Asli Sonsuz. The talk will take place on Thursday\, October 10\, 2024\, at 7 pm UK time. \nHealth services in Turkish culture: from the Ottoman Empire to the present day \nThe words of Sheikh Edebali\, the leader of the Ahi organization and the mentor of Osman Bey\, who is the founder of the Ottoman Empire\, show us the importance given to health by the states in Turkish culture and the role it plays. \n“Let the people live so that the state may live.” \nIn Turkish culture\, the state is always seen as a father. This view is recognized as a paternalistic approach in political science. The father is a powerful figure who meets our basic needs and protects us. In Europe\, the state assuming responsibility for health is still relatively new. In Europe\, just at the beginning of the 20th century\, health started to be seen as a state service and responsibility. In these countries\, the movement initiated by Bismarck in Germany in 1883 and Lord Beveridge in the UK in 1942 can be considered the beginning. \nIn this talk\, we will briefly look at the structure of health services in Turkish culture and the role of the state from the Ottoman period to the present day. In fact\, we will evaluate the health policies of the Ottoman period\, the Republican period and today\, each of which is a separate subject. \nDr. Aliye Asli Sonsuz\, is a TUBITAK scholar at Greenwich University in London as a visiting researcher. She conducts her study in the field of health economics and policies. She is also faculty member of the Health Sciences and board member of Health Systems and Policies Application and Research Center (SASPAM) at Istanbul Medipol University. She received her Phd. from Istanbul Medipol University and master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Ankara University in the field of Health Management. During her career\, she worked for Marmara/Hacettepe Universities and the Turkish Red Crescent as an administrator. \nDate: Thursday 10th October 2024\nTime: 7 pm\nVenue: Yunus Emre Institute London\, 10 Maple Street\, London\, W1T 5HA \nTraditional Turkish Refreshments will be served. \nAdmission is FREE but registration*** is ESSENTIAL via Eventbrite.

On the 29th anniversary\, the Yunus Emre Institute London and the Muslim Leadership Foundation UK present a special event to commemorate the victims and to reflect on the lessons learned from this tragic chapter in history. \nThe Srebrenica genocide\, which occurred in July 1995\, was the worst atrocity on European soil since World War II. Over 8\,000 Bosniak men and boys were systematically murdered by Bosnian Serb forces in the town of Srebrenica\, a designated UN safe area. This heinous act serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of hatred and intolerance. Our event seeks to honour the memory of those lost and to emphasise the importance of learning from the past to prevent such tragedies in the future. \nThe event will feature a distinguished panel that will provide a comprehensive exploration of the Srebrenica genocide\, its historical context\, and its enduring impact. Key discussion points will include recounting the events and aftermath of the Srebrenica genocide\, examining lessons for the international community and the Muslim Ummah\, discussing the impact on the global Muslim community\, and addressing strategies for preventing future genocides through education\, advocacy\, and cooperation. \nJoin us as we remember the past and commit to a future where such tragedies are not repeated. \nPanellists:  \n– Samra Koricic Mujkic\, Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina in London \n– Sami Hamdi\, Managing Director of International Interest \nModerator: \n– Meryem Nur Kucuk\, Researcher and Director of the and the Muslim Leadership Foundation UK. \nThis event is a collaboration between the Yunus Emre Institute London and the Muslim Leadership Foundation UK.

SUMMARY:Talk & Book Signing: A Turkish Wanderer in London by Emre Aracı
DESCRIPTION:[vc_btn title=”Click Here to Register” color=”orange” size=”lg” align=”left” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Femrearaci.eventbrite.co.uk|title:Click%20Here%20to%20Register|target:_blank”] \n\n\nAn evening dedicated to the historical and cultural journey through London with esteemed music historian\, Dr Emre Aracı. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYunus Emre Institute London is thrilled to host a book signing and talk event dedicated to the historical and cultural journey through London with esteemed music historian\, Dr Emre Aracı on 12 June 2024 at 7 PM. \nThis exclusive event will recount the exploration of Turkish traces in London\, as detailed in Dr Aracı’s meticulously researched and beautifully illustrated book\, Londra’da Türk İzleri [Turkish Traces in London]. \nWith nearly four decades of residency in the United Kingdom\, Dr Aracı has immersed himself in the vibrant mosaic of London’s royal palaces\, museums\, parks\, churches\, and markets\, tirelessly seeking out the intricate connections between his homeland and the British capital. \nIn his meticulously researched and beautifully illustrated book\, Londra’da Türk İzleri [TurkishTraces in London]\, published in 2022 in Istanbul by Oğlak Yayınları\, he delves deep into the annals of history\, literature and music\, as he uncovers the rich yet little-known Turkish hues interwoven into the fabric of London over centuries\, with some lost to time and others still perceptible. In this illustrated talk\, based on his book\, Dr Aracı offers more than a scholarly account—it is a deeply personal odyssey of discovery as he invites his audience to accompany him on a unique expedition through the bustling streets of the metropolis\, spanning three and a half centuries. From London’s long-vanished historic Turkish coffee houses to Turkish baths\, in the company of literary luminaries such as Lady Mary Wortley Montagu\, Virginia Woolf and Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar\, Aracı guides us through labyrinths of epistolary and poetic memory. \nOur journey starts outside St James’s Palace as the ‘janissary band’ of King George III is drilling in the Colour Court in 1793\, and The Times of London announces the arrival of the Turkish Ambassador in town\, among the “memorable events” of that year. \nThe event will start with a conversation with Dr Aracı\, who will share his insights on the intricate connections between his homeland and the British capital. This will be followed by a journey through the vibrant mosaic of London’s royal palaces\, museums\, parks\, churches\, and markets\, as detailed in his book. \nParticipation in the event is free\, but attendees will have the opportunity to purchase the Turkish version of the book at a special discount and have it signed by Dr Aracı himself. Please note that the English version of the book is currently in the printing process. Alternatively\, you can bring your own copy of the book to be signed. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for this unique expedition through the bustling streets of the metropolis\, spanning three and a half centuries. \nThis talk forms part of the Arts & Culture Lecture Series organised by Yunus Emre Institute London since 2017. \nPlease be advised that filming and/or photography will be taking place at the event for the purposes of archiving\, marketing\, and all other publications. SUMMARY:Young Scholars: The Image of Modern Turkey in British India
DESCRIPTION:[vc_btn title=”Click Here to Register” color=”violet” size=”lg” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fbaharizmir.eventbrite.co.uk|title:Click%20Here%20to%20Register|target:_blank”] \nAbout this event:\nYunus Emre Institute London is delighted to announce its upcoming Young Scholar Seminar Series talk: “The Image of Modern Turkey in British India\,” by Dr. Bahar Izmir. The talk will take place on Thursday May 30\, 2024 at 7 pm UK Time. \nThe Image of Modern Turkey in British India \nIn the historical course of relations between Indian Muslims and the Ottoman Empire\, the institution of the Khilafat was the centre of the interactions for years. After the abolition of Khilafat on March 3\, 1924\, the impact of Pan-Islam started to decrease\, thus in this period\, whereas Turkey was transformed into a modern state\, the independence movement in India went into an important advance. Alongside the criticism against the abolition of the Caliphate\, there was also a rising interest in independent Turkey’s steps\, domestic and foreign policies\, and its leadership among nationalists of India. During this period\, different motivations began to shape the relations established between India and Turkey. Indeed\, the ideological dimension of the bilateral relations between the two countries was generally constructed on the base of a common rhetoric of “National Movement”. The lecture claims that Turkey’s transition to a modern state and reforms of Ataturk Period has a profound impact on Indian Nationalists. The lecture also aims to evaluate the profound impact of Turkish Revolution on Indian Nationalist Movement in the light of Indian archival sources\, newspapers and correspondence of the time. \nBahar Izmir\, an academician and historian specializing in Modern Turkish History and India. She works in Ankara University\, the Institute of Turkish Revolution History as Assistant Professor. She was graduated from Middle East Technical University in 2012. She has completed her master (2016) and PhD (2022) in Ankara University. Her phd thesis is titled “The Relations between Turkey and British India between 1919-1947”. During the research phase of her doctoral thesis\, she conducted archival research in India for a year and worked as a research fellow at Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi for a year. She has prominent publications\, including book chapters and articles on modern Turkish history\, Turkish-American relations and Turkey-India relations. She gives the lecture of “Atatürk’s Principles and History of Turkish Revolution” in Ankara University.
