SUMMARY:Rhythms of the Divine: Whirling Dervishes and Sufi Music
DESCRIPTION:Rhythms of the Divine: Whirling Dervishes and Sufi Music\nA rare and deeply spiritual performance of the Sema Mukâbelesi\, the whirling dervish ceremony\, by the Konya Metropolitan Municipality Turkish Sufi Music and Sema Ensemble!   \nPresented by Yunus Emre Institute  \n📍 Britten Theatre\, Royal College of Music  \n📅 Tuesday\, 8 July 2025  \n🕖 Starts at 7:00 PM (Doors open at 6:30 PM. Late entry not permitted after 7:15 PM.)  \nJoin us for a rare and unforgettable evening of spiritual artistry as the internationally acclaimed Konya Metropolitan Municipality Turkish Sufi Music and Sema Ensemble presents a ceremonial performance of the Sema Ceremony—the sacred ritual of the Whirling Dervishes.  \n🌙 A Sacred Tradition\, Brought to Life  \nRooted in the mystical philosophy of Mevlânâ Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī\, the Sema is not a performance but a living act of devotion and remembrance. Dervishes turn with solemn grace to the deep\, meditative sounds of ney\, kudüm\, and voice\, symbolising the soul’s journey toward unity and love.  \n🎶 Evening Programme  \nThe night will open with a short concert of Turkish Sufi music\, inviting the audience into the mystical soundscape of Anatolia through taksims\, ilahis\, and devotional works drawn from centuries of tradition. Performed in the meşk style—an oral transmission method central to Ottoman-Turkish classical music—this musical introduction sets a contemplative tone and gradually deepens the spiritual atmosphere.  \nSeamlessly following this prelude\, the Sema Ceremony will unfold—a sacred ritual in which dervishes whirl in meditative unity with the music. Every gesture\, rhythm\, and silence is imbued with meaning in this profound Mevlevi rite\, performed with reverence\, discipline\, and spiritual intensity.  \n🎼 About the Ensemble  \nThe Konya Metropolitan Municipality Turkish Sufi Music and Sema Ensemble performs traditional Turkish Sufi music with a special focus on the Mevlevi Sema Ceremony\, staying true to its original form and spirit. \nAlongside its ceremonial performances\, the ensemble also presents concert programs featuring classical vocal and instrumental works from the rich repertoire of Turkish music. \nThe ensemble comprises 30 members: 15 whirling dervishes (semazens)\, 8 instrumentalists\, 6 vocalists\, and one postnişin who leads the ceremony. The group is led by its general artistic director\, Dr. Musa Kazım Tığlıoğlu. \nThis event is part of the Rhythms of the Divine series and offers a rare opportunity for London audiences to witness the Sema Mukâbelesi in its most authentic and elevated form. In an age where many sacred traditions are simplified or aestheticised for spectacle\, this performance restores the Mevlevi ceremony to its original dignity—as a refined\, disciplined\, and deeply poetic act of remembrance. \nWe warmly invite you to join us for a night of contemplation\, harmony\, and transcendence. \nDon’t miss out on this unique spiritual experience — get your tickets now! Kindly scroll down to select your ticket option \nAdditional Information: \n\nPlease arrive by 6:15 PM to ensure timely seating. Late entry will not be permitted after 7:15 PM to avoid disruption.\nThe event lasts approximately 90 minutes with no intermission.\nThe Royal College of Music is easily accessible by public transport; please check local routes and parking options.\nDress code is smart casual. Please wear comfortable shoes as seating is unreserved.\nPhotography and video recording during the performance are strictly prohibited to respect the sacred nature of the ceremony.\nProfessional photography and videography will be carried out exclusively by authorized personnel appointed by the organizer. Alongside composing\, he is active as a melodica performer\, regularly commissioning and premiering new works for the instrument. His studies are supported by The Guildhall Trust\, Talent Unlimited\, and the Eczacıbaşı Foundation. \nGoi Ywei Chern\nGoi Ywei Chern is a Singaporean composer and guitarist currently based in London. SUMMARY:Türkiye Pavilion at London Design Biennale 2025
DESCRIPTION:Türkiye at London Design Biennale 2025: Halise Karakaya Unveils a Sensory Tribute to the Spirit of Istanbul  \nThe Türkiye Pavilion opens at London Design Biennale 2025\, inviting visitors to explore the emotional and sensory layers of Istanbul through a captivating new installation by interdisciplinary artist Halise Karakaya. Titled Emotional Reflections: The Soul of Seven Horizons\, the work will remain open to the public at Somerset House from 5–29 June 2025.  \nInspired by Istanbul’s iconic seven hills\, the installation combines sculptural forms\, scent\, light\, and sound to construct an atmosphere rooted in memory and perception. Seven aluminium forms\, CNC-cut and layered above beds of Turkish coffee grounds\, offer a tactile and olfactory entry point into the city’s cultural resonance. Suspended above\, fifteen sculptural pieces crafted from Karakaya’s proprietary material formula respond to an ambient soundscape of the Bosphorus—ferry horns\, gulls\, and waves—via a responsive lighting system that activates different layers depending on the intensity of sound\, creating a constantly shifting environment.  \nThe project is curated by Alinda Kring\, a London-based curator and art advisor known for her cross-cultural approach to contemporary and classical art. Karakaya led the creative direction\, working in collaboration with designers Ceren Müftüoğlu\, Karina Tertychnya\, and Zeynep Yeşildağ\, while the immersive sound experience was developed by audio engineer Fırat Özer.  \nThe Türkiye Pavilion is realised through the collaboration of Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London\, the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Culture and Tourism – London Office\, the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (ICVB)\, and Gilan Istanbul. With over a decade of cultural engagement in the UK\, Yunus Emre Institute – London continues to support initiatives that amplify Türkiye’s creative presence on international platforms.  \nThis installation also marks the beginning of a new creative partnership between Karakaya and Gilan Istanbul\, merging sculptural vision with artisanal elegance. Future projects are expected to expand this dialogue between contemporary form and heritage craft.  \nOpen throughout the duration of the Biennale\, the Türkiye Pavilion offers a space where Istanbul is not simply observed—but remembered\, felt\, and reimagined through the senses.  \n
