Drawing on his Yashim series\, set in 19th-century Istanbul\, he considers how the city emerges in writing as a layered construct — shaped by archival knowledge\, sensory detail\, and the imaginative reconstruction of lived worlds. \nRather than approaching Istanbul as a fixed historical entity\, the talk explores the city as a continually reinterpreted space\, where memory\, myth\, and material culture are in constant dialogue. Through reflections on storytelling\, food\, and the textures of Ottoman urban life\, Goodwin opens up the processes through which a city is not only described\, but re-authored — shifting between the disciplines of history and the freedoms of fiction. \nAt the heart of the talk lies a broader inquiry into narrative form itself: how does one translate the density of a historical civilisation into the language of the novel? SUMMARY:From Anatolia to Europe: Folk Echoes for Cello and Piano
DESCRIPTION:Turkish pianist Pınar Çelik Warsi and Welsh cellist Ben Tarlton invite audiences on a cross-cultural musical journey\, exploring folk-inspired works from Anatolia to Europe. \nThis evocative recital\, presented by Yunus Emre Institute\, brings together a rich repertoire shaped by the musical traditions of Türkiye\, Hungary\, Spain\, England\, France and Germany. Featuring works by Özkan Manav\, Ahmed Adnan Saygun\, Béla Bartók\, Manuel de Falla\, Ralph Vaughan Williams\, Robert Schumann\, and Claude Debussy\, the programme highlights how composers have drawn from folk music to create distinctive and deeply expressive musical languages. \nThroughout the concert\, brief spoken introductions will offer insights into the pieces\, including the regional origins of folk melodies and the composers’ engagement with traditional music. Particular attention will be given to the significant fieldwork of Ahmed Adnan Saygun and Béla Bartók in Anatolia\, shedding light on the cultural connections that shape this repertoire. \nSpecial Note \nThis concert takes place on 23 April\, celebrated in Türkiye as National Sovereignty and Children’s Day—a day dedicated to children\, culture\, and the future. DESCRIPTION:As part of the Arts and Culture Lecture Series\, Yunus Emre Institute in London presents an evening with historian and scholar Hüsamettin Şimşir\, whose work has long engaged with Istanbul not simply as a setting\, but as a site where history\, imagination\, and narrative consciousness intersect. \nIn his talk\, Hüsamettin Şimşir examines the evolving roles of women in warfare across nomadic societies from Antiquity to the late medieval period\, with a particular focus on the Eurasian steppe and Anatolian frontier regions. Drawing on archaeological evidence\, classical sources\, and medieval texts\, it challenges the assumption that warfare was an exclusively male domain in premodern societies. Findings such as weapon-bearing female burials and skeletal evidence of habitual horseback riding suggest that women in early steppe cultures possessed and\, at times\, exercised martial skills. \nThe study traces a long-term transformation in women’s participation in warfare. While women in ancient nomadic societies could engage more directly in mounted combat\, by the medieval period their roles increasingly shifted toward logistical support\, camp management\, and\, in some cases\, political or military leadership. However\, this shift did not represent a complete disappearance of women from martial life. Instead\, it reflects a reconfiguration shaped by the emergence of centralized states\, institutionalized armies\, and new religious and social frameworks. \nFocusing on late medieval Anatolia\, the talk highlights evidence from sources such as Gazilik Tarikası and contemporary chronicles\, which reveal that women could still participate in warfare as part of a broader communal obligation. In certain frontier contexts\, women were not only involved in support roles but could also engage in combat\, diplomacy\, and the negotiation of peace. DESCRIPTION:A journey from Türkiye to the Silk Road\, heading toward the depths of Asia. \n\n\n\n\nSweet Waters of Asia (Asya’nın Tatlı Suları) is a concert project by internationally acclaimed pianist Rüya Taner\, inspired by the historic cultural routes of the Silk Road. The performance will take place on Saturday\, 13 June 2026 at 7:00 pm at St. James’s Piccadilly\, London. \nConceived as a musical journey across cultures\, the programme explores a sonic landscape stretching from Russia and Türkiye to the Caucasus and Central Asia.
