SUMMARY:Heaven\, Earth & the Ten Thousand Things Peter Sanders | Talk & Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Arts and Culture Lecture Series\, Yunus Emre Institute London presents an evening with world-renowned photographer Peter Sanders\, whose lens has spent decades capturing the profound intersections of the spiritual and the material across the Islamic world. \nIn this talk\, Sanders introduces his seminal work\, Heaven\, Earth\, and the Ten Thousand Things: The Lives of the Muslims of China\, reflecting on his extensive travels through the diverse landscapes and soul-stirring architecture of China’s Muslim heritage. He considers how the photograph acts as more than a mere document; it is a bridge between the seen and the unseen\, where the “ten thousand things” of the physical world point toward a singular\, transcendent reality. \nRather than approaching his subjects as static monuments\, Sanders explores the living breath of Chinese Islamic culture. He discusses the unique synthesis of aesthetic traditions\, where the precision of Confucian order and the fluidity of Taoist thought meet the devotion of the Islamic faith. Through his reflections\, he opens up the process of “spiritual reportage”—the art of waiting for the moment when light and spirit align. At the heart of the talk lies a broader inquiry into the nature of sacred art: how does a photographer move beyond the surface to capture the hidden\, what happens when the visual language of the East encounters the universal values of faith\, and how can a single frame translate the weight of a thousand-year-old tradition for a modern audience? \nMoving between personal anecdote and technical mastery\, this evening offers a rare insight into the life of a traveler who has spent fifty years seeking the signs on the horizon. It is an invitation to reconsider the world not as a collection of disparate objects\, but as a unified\, radiant tapestry of the divine. \nThe talk will be followed by a book signing.

SUMMARY:The Book of Human Emotions | Tiffany Watt Smith: Talk & Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Arts and Culture Lecture Series\, the Yunus Emre Institute in London invites you to an evening with award-winning historian and novelist Tiffany Watt Smith\, whose work explores the cultural and historical forces shaping our emotional lives. \nMaking Emotions Extraordinary Again\nAre joy\, anger and love truly universal? Or do emotions have histories\, shaped and reshaped across different cultures and eras? \nIn this thought-provoking talk\, Tiffany Watt Smith—author of The Book of Human Emotions—explores the hidden cultural frameworks that influence how we experience and express our feelings. Focusing in particular on the shifting meanings of happiness and joy across time\, she reveals how emotions are far from fixed\, and how their histories can transform the way we understand ourselves and others. \nBy uncovering the rich and often surprising histories behind our most familiar feelings\, this talk invites us to see emotions not as given\, but as deeply cultural—and to rediscover their complexity in our contemporary lives. \nThe talk will be followed by a book signing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more information on the event\, please visit Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London’s Website: https://yeelondon.org.uk/ or email us at londra@yee.org.tr \n  \nIMPORTANT NOTES: As this is a free event\, we often experience a number of no-shows. To make sure seats don’t go empty\, we may issue a limited number of additional tickets. Admission is therefore subject to venue capacity and operates on a first-come\, first-served basis. Please note that registration or an e-ticket does not guarantee a seat\, and standing admission may be possible. \nPhotography and filming will take place during the event for archiving\, marketing\, and promotional purposes. SUMMARY:From Steppe Warriors to Women Ghazis | Hüsamettin Şimşir: Talk
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Arts and Culture Lecture Series\, Yunus Emre Institute in London presents an evening with historian and scholar Hüsamettin Şimşir\, whose work has long engaged with Istanbul not simply as a setting\, but as a site where history\, imagination\, and narrative consciousness intersect. \nIn his talk\, Hüsamettin Şimşir examines the evolving roles of women in warfare across nomadic societies from Antiquity to the late medieval period\, with a particular focus on the Eurasian steppe and Anatolian frontier regions. Drawing on archaeological evidence\, classical sources\, and medieval texts\, it challenges the assumption that warfare was an exclusively male domain in premodern societies. Findings such as weapon-bearing female burials and skeletal evidence of habitual horseback riding suggest that women in early steppe cultures possessed and\, at times\, exercised martial skills. \nThe study traces a long-term transformation in women’s participation in warfare. While women in ancient nomadic societies could engage more directly in mounted combat\, by the medieval period their roles increasingly shifted toward logistical support\, camp management\, and\, in some cases\, political or military leadership. However\, this shift did not represent a complete disappearance of women from martial life. Instead\, it reflects a reconfiguration shaped by the emergence of centralized states\, institutionalized armies\, and new religious and social frameworks. \nFocusing on late medieval Anatolia\, the talk highlights evidence from sources such as Gazilik Tarikası and contemporary chronicles\, which reveal that women could still participate in warfare as part of a broader communal obligation. In certain frontier contexts\, women were not only involved in support roles but could also engage in combat\, diplomacy\, and the negotiation of peace. These findings suggest that steppe traditions of gender flexibility persisted and were adapted within the socio-political realities of the Anatolian frontier\, offering a more nuanced understanding of women’s place in premodern military history. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more information on the event\, please visit Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London’s Website: https://yeelondon.org.uk/ or email us at londra@yee.org.tr \n \nIMPORTANT NOTES: As this is a free event\, we often experience a number of no-shows. To make sure seats don’t go empty\, we may issue a limited number of additional tickets. Admission is therefore subject to venue capacity and operates on a first-come\, first-served basis. DESCRIPTION:A journey from Türkiye to the Silk Road\, heading toward the depths of Asia. \n\n\n\n\nSweet Waters of Asia (Asya’nın Tatlı Suları) is a concert project by internationally acclaimed pianist Rüya Taner\, inspired by the historic cultural routes of the Silk Road. The performance will take place on Saturday\, 13 June 2026 at 7:00 pm at St. James’s Piccadilly\, London. \nConceived as a musical journey across cultures\, the programme explores a sonic landscape stretching from Russia and Türkiye to the Caucasus and Central Asia. It brings together works by leading composers of the Romantic tradition\, including Mikhail Glinka\, Alexander Borodin\, and Sergei Lyapunov\, whose music reflects the 19th-century fascination with Eastern themes and tonal colours. \nAlongside these are compositions by internationally recognised contemporary composers such as Fazıl Say\, Kamran İnce\, and Aziza Mustafazadeh\, whose works bridge classical traditions with modern expression and regional influences. \nThe programme also highlights the rich musical heritage of Azerbaijan and Central Asia through works by Vasif Adigözalov and Rovshen Nepesov\, complemented by Rüya Taner’s own piano arrangements of traditional Turkish melodies\, bringing historical musical traditions into dialogue with the modern concert stage. \nFollowing the success of her internationally presented project Sweet Waters of Europe\, Rüya Taner continues her artistic exploration eastward\, offering a programme that celebrates the diverse musical voices of Asia and the cultural connections that unite them. \nThe concert forms part of the Sweet Waters of Asia project\, with Bromcom as principal sponsor\, and with Yunus Emre Institute as a key cultural partner\, alongside Tower Garments London and the Turkish Women’s Philanthropic Association. It is presented under the auspices of the Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye in London\, in cooperation with the TRNC London Representative Office. \n\n\n\n\n[vc_btn title=”Book your tickets on Eventbrite” style=”flat” color=”warning” size=”lg” align=”left” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fruyataner.eventbrite.co.uk|target:_blank” el_class=”eventbrite-cta”]\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nAdditional Information: \n\nPlease arrive by 6:30 PM to allow sufficient time for seating. SUMMARY:Talk | Identity\, Belonging\, and Migrant Meaning-Making by Semanur Darbaz
DESCRIPTION:Young Scholar Seminar Series #41\nIdentity\, Belonging\, and Migrant Meaning-Making in Turkish Museums with Semanur Darbaz (Nottingham Trent University) \nYunus Emre Enstitüsü – London is pleased to host the 41sr session of its Young Scholar Seminar Series\, featuring Semanur Darbaz\, researcher and museum practitioner at Nottingham Trent University \nThis talk looks at how museums in Turkey represent migration\, cultural diversity and belonging\, and how visitors with migrant backgrounds interpret these narratives. The research examines whether museums can function as spaces of social cohesion and belonging\, while also critically questioning the Western epistemological assumptions that shape understandings of museums as a universal modern institution tied to nation-building\, and social progress. \nBy situating Turkish museums within local histories of identity formation and cultural politics\, the project offers a decolonial and context-sensitive contribution to critical museum studies. Combining walking interviews at museum visits\, group discussions\, and creative participatory methods\, the research highlights both the possibilities and the limits of museums as spaces where identity\, belonging\, and alternative social imaginaries can be negotiated. \n📅 Date: Monday\, 22 June 2026\n🕡 Time: 6:30 PM\n📍 Location: Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London\, 10 Maple Street\, Fitzrovia\, W1T 5HA\n🗣️ Language: English\n🎟️ Admission: Free (registration required) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis talk forms part of the Young Scholar Seminar Series organised by Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London since 2017. \nFor more information on the event\, please visit Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London’s Website: https://yeelondon.org.uk/ or email us at londra@yee.org.tr \nIMPORTANT NOTES: As this is a free event\, we often experience a number of no-shows.
