SUMMARY:Great Exhibition Road Festival
DESCRIPTION:Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London is excited to announce our participation in the Great Exhibition Road Festival 2026 on Saturday 6th June – Sunday 7th June! Look out for our stall exploring the art of Paper Marbling (Ebru) and its relationship with fluid dynamics. \n\nDate: Saturday 6th June – Sunday 7th June 2026\nTime: 12.00pm – 6.00pm\nLocation: South Kensington\n\nThe Great Exhibition Road Festival is an arts and sciences festival launched in 2019\, bringing together iconic museums and cultural organisations — including Imperial College London\, the Royal Albert Hall\, the Science Museum\, the V&A\, and the Natural History Museum. The 2025 edition welcomed 55\,000 visitors over two days of creative workshops\, talks\, performances\, and installations. For 2026\, the Festival aims to attract 60\,000 visitors.  \nEbru is the Turkish art of paper marbling — a method of aqueous surface design created by scattering insoluble pigments onto thickened water before transferring the patterns onto paper. While guided by technique and experience\, each composition emerges through the interaction between pigment\, water\, and movement\, making every print entirely unique. \nRegister Here!

SUMMARY:The Art of Şelpe: A Bağlama Fingerstyle Workshop
DESCRIPTION:An exclusive workshop will be held face-to-face with Ahmet Ozan Baysal at the Institute. \n\n\n\n\nWorkshop: Bağlama Şelpe Session For All Levels \n\nDate: Tuesday\, 9th June 2026\nTime: 6:30 – 8:30 pm (UK time)\nDuration: 2 hours\nFee: £30\nClass Size: Min. 5 – Max. 15 Students\nInstructor: Ahmet Ozan Baysal\nLocation: 10 Maple Street W1T 5HA (Nearest tube stations: Warren Street and Goodge Street)\n\nWorkshop Overview\nŞelpe is one of the most distinctive and deeply rooted playing techniques of the bağlama tradition in Anatolia. Played directly with the fingers rather than with a plectrum\, it can transform the instrument’s sound world so radically that it may at times evoke the impression of an entirely different instrument. In this sense\, şelpe not only reshapes the sonic character of the bağlama\, but also expands its expressive and musical horizons through rhythm\, polyphony\, resonance\, touch\, and subtle ornamentation. \nThis two-hour event is structured in two parts: the first hour will offer an open introductory workshop for curious listeners\, beginners\, and anyone interested in discovering the bağlama and the musical world of şelpe through cultural context\, live demonstration\, and simple practical exercises; the second hour will be a more focused practical session for intermediate and advanced bağlama players\, concentrating on technical development\, interpretation\, and selected musical material from the repertoire. \nThe workshop will be led by Dr Ahmet Ozan Baysal\, a London-based bağlama player\, composer\, performer\, and PhD scholar whose artistic and academic work has developed a distinctive focus on şelpe and its contemporary possibilities. Alongside his performance career\, he has undertaken extensive research on the technique and its musical language\, bringing together scholarly depth with a refined and highly personal approach to the instrument. Known for his work with the double-necked bağlama\, and for his recent solo album “Tel ve Ten” (ARC Music 2025)\, he highlights the expressive\, polyphonic\, and transformative potential of the bağlama within both traditional and contemporary contexts. \nThe session lasts 2 hours and offers a unique opportunity to engage with Turkish musical heritage in a vibrant\, communal setting. \nEntry Requirements\n\nParticipants must be 16 years or older.\nBringing your own Bağlama (Saz) is highly recommended.\nIf you play a different instrument and would like to join the Meşk session as part of the ensemble\, you are also welcome to participate.\n\nDisclaimer\n\nThe workshop will be delivered in English; however\, some Turkish musical terminology may be used.\nPlease note that photography and filming may take place throughout the event for promotional and archival purposes. By registering\, attendees consent to the use of their image and likeness in such materials.\n\nCancellation Policy\n\nFull refunds will be issued for cancellations made at least 15 days before the scheduled session.\nCancellations made less than 15 days in advance are non-refundable.\nIf the session is cancelled by the organiser\, all participants will receive a full refund.\n\nRegister Here! \nFor any questions\, please contact us at londra@yee.org.tr

SUMMARY:Echoing Travelogues: The Beyond and Us | Concert
DESCRIPTION:Dareyn Ensemble & Holland Baroque in Concert\nEchoing Travelogues: The Beyond and Us\, led by artistic director and lead artist Emine Bostancı\, is an immersive performance shaped by a curatorial vision that brings together music\, history\, and storytelling into a unified dramaturgical journey. Under her leadership\, an international ensemble bridges Ottoman\, Persian\, and European traditions within a single interdisciplinary work. \nFeaturing Emine Bostancı (Istanbul kemenche)\, the ensemble includes Zeynep Yıldız Abbasoğlu (kanun)\, Judith Steenbrink (baroque violin)\, Tineke Steenbrink (positive organ)\, and Vinsent Planjer (percussion)\, with narration by Nora Fischer. Together\, they span Ottoman court music\, Mevlevi ritual traditions\, Persian classical music\, and European Baroque repertoire. \nThe programme invites audiences on a journey across centuries and cultures; from Istanbul to Vienna\, and from Persia to Europe. Inspired by the travel diaries of diplomats and explorers (15th–18th centuries)\, it brings to life the sounds and encounters that shaped cultural exchange across continents. \nThe work draws on historical travel diaries\, including figures such as Levinus Warner\, exploring how cultures define themselves through encounters with “the other”. It highlights identity as something shaped through exchange and perception\, rather than fixed boundaries. \nThe performance features music from Ottoman\, Persian\, and early European traditions\, performed on historical instruments. Iconic spaces such as Hagia Sophia\, Topkapı Palace\, Mevlevi lodges\, and St. Stephen’s Cathedral are reimagined through 4D sound design\, creating an immersive spatial experience. \nThe production is supported by an international creative team\, including Head of Research Dr. Zeynep Yıldız Abbasoğlu\, sound designer Dr. Hasan Baran Fırat\, and video designer Ataman Girişken\, and is developed in collaboration with Holland Baroque and 4DSound. Produced by Muziekgebouw Productiehuis and Dareyn Foundation\, the work combines historical research\, spatial audio practices\, and contemporary performance technologies to create a richly layered artistic experience. \nOrganised by Yunus Emre Institute in London\, the project positions London as a meeting point for historical reflection\, artistic dialogue\, and intercultural exchange. \nMore than a concert\, Echoing Travelogues: The Beyond and Us is a sensory exploration of memory\, identity\, and cultural imagination. \nEvent Details\nDate: Friday\, 12 June 2026\nVenue: The Tabernacle\, 34–35 Powis Square\, London W11 2AY\, London\nTime: 7:00 PM (doors open at 6:00 PM) \nJoin us for an evocative evening of music and storytelling.

SUMMARY:Piano Recital: Sweet Waters of Asia with Rüya Taner
DESCRIPTION:A journey from Türkiye to the Silk Road\, heading toward the depths of Asia. \n\n\n\n\nSweet Waters of Asia (Asya’nın Tatlı Suları) is a concert project by internationally acclaimed pianist Rüya Taner\, inspired by the historic cultural routes of the Silk Road. The performance will take place on Saturday\, 13 June 2026 at 7:00 pm at St. James’s Piccadilly\, London. \nConceived as a musical journey across cultures\, the programme explores a sonic landscape stretching from Russia and Türkiye to the Caucasus and Central Asia. It brings together works by leading composers of the Romantic tradition\, including Mikhail Glinka\, Alexander Borodin\, and Sergei Lyapunov\, whose music reflects the 19th-century fascination with Eastern themes and tonal colours. \nAlongside these are compositions by internationally recognised contemporary composers such as Fazıl Say\, Kamran İnce\, and Aziza Mustafazadeh\, whose works bridge classical traditions with modern expression and regional influences. \nThe programme also highlights the rich musical heritage of Azerbaijan and Central Asia through works by Vasif Adigözalov and Rovshen Nepesov\, complemented by Rüya Taner’s own piano arrangements of traditional Turkish melodies\, bringing historical musical traditions into dialogue with the modern concert stage. \nFollowing the success of her internationally presented project Sweet Waters of Europe\, Rüya Taner continues her artistic exploration eastward\, offering a programme that celebrates the diverse musical voices of Asia and the cultural connections that unite them. \nThe concert forms part of the Sweet Waters of Asia project\, with Bromcom as principal sponsor\, and with Yunus Emre Institute as a key cultural partner\, alongside Tower Garments London and the Turkish Women’s Philanthropic Association. It is presented under the auspices of the Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye in London\, in cooperation with the TRNC London Representative Office. \n\n\n\n\n[vc_btn title=”Book your tickets on Eventbrite” style=”flat” color=”warning” size=”lg” align=”left” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fruyataner.eventbrite.co.uk|target:_blank” el_class=”eventbrite-cta”]\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nAdditional Information: \n\nPlease arrive by 6:30 PM to allow sufficient time for seating. SUMMARY:Talk | Identity\, Belonging\, and Migrant Meaning-Making by Semanur Darbaz
DESCRIPTION:Young Scholar Seminar Series #41\nIdentity\, Belonging\, and Migrant Meaning-Making in Turkish Museums with Semanur Darbaz (Nottingham Trent University) \nYunus Emre Enstitüsü – London is pleased to host the 41sr session of its Young Scholar Seminar Series\, featuring Semanur Darbaz\, researcher and museum practitioner at Nottingham Trent University \nThis talk looks at how museums in Turkey represent migration\, cultural diversity and belonging\, and how visitors with migrant backgrounds interpret these narratives. The research examines whether museums can function as spaces of social cohesion and belonging\, while also critically questioning the Western epistemological assumptions that shape understandings of museums as a universal modern institution tied to nation-building\, and social progress. \nBy situating Turkish museums within local histories of identity formation and cultural politics\, the project offers a decolonial and context-sensitive contribution to critical museum studies. Combining walking interviews at museum visits\, group discussions\, and creative participatory methods\, the research highlights both the possibilities and the limits of museums as spaces where identity\, belonging\, and alternative social imaginaries can be negotiated. \n📅 Date: Monday\, 22 June 2026\n🕡 Time: 6:30 PM\n📍 Location: Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London\, 10 Maple Street\, Fitzrovia\, W1T 5HA\n🗣️ Language: English\n🎟️ Admission: Free (registration required) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis talk forms part of the Young Scholar Seminar Series organised by Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London since 2017. \nFor more information on the event\, please visit Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London’s Website: https://yeelondon.org.uk/ or email us at londra@yee.org.tr \nIMPORTANT NOTES: As this is a free event\, we often experience a number of no-shows.
