SUMMARY:Traditional Tragacanth Dolls Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Yunus Emre Institute London Gallery from 7th to 10th May 2024 for the debut exhibition of Traditional Tragacanth Dolls by Sibel Radiye Gül. Discover a unique collection exploring Anatolian motifs\, Turkish-British relations\, and universal themes. \nTraditional Tragacanth Doll Artist Sibel Radiye Gül’s first tragacanth doll exhibition in London showcases a unique art form that connects storytelling from the past to the future. \nSelected from the Cappadocia Museum of Art and History\, the exhibition features a wide collection ranging from female motifs in Anatolia from ancient times to the present\, Turkish-British relations\, famous portraits\, and universal messages. The exhibition is organised by the TB Centre for Cultural and Creative Industries in London in collaboration with the Yunus Emre Institute. \nSibel Radiye Gül is a traditional crafts artist who has been working on tragacanth dolls since 1980. Especially in works depicting Anatolian history\, culture\, and folk tales\, tragacanth dolls are brought to life with costumes and decorated scenes appropriate to the selected theme. Due to her training in various fields of traditional Turkish arts (wood carving\, cross-stitch\, embroidery\, needle lace\, marbling\, felt\, miniature\, illumination)\, Radiye Gül prepares all the costumes\, decorations\, and accessories required for tragacanth doll compositions herself. Gül has been registered as the “Turkish Ministry of Culture’s Traditional Tragacanth Doll Artist” since 2012. She exhibits domestically and internationally\, continuing her tragacanth doll work with stories reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Anatolia. \nThe Cappadocia Museum of Art and History\, founded by Gül in 2001 as Turkey’s first Tragacanth Doll Museum\, is an important cultural memory space for the making\, preservation\, and transmission to future generations of traditional tragacanth dolls. The museum has been operating in the town of Mustafapaşa (Ürgüp) in Cappadocia under the status of a “private museum” affiliated with the Turkish Ministry of Culture since 2005.

SUMMARY:Young Scholars: The Image of Modern Turkey in British India
DESCRIPTION:[vc_btn title=”Click Here to Register” color=”violet” size=”lg” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fbaharizmir.eventbrite.co.uk|title:Click%20Here%20to%20Register|target:_blank”] \nAbout this event:\nYunus Emre Institute London is delighted to announce its upcoming Young Scholar Seminar Series talk: “The Image of Modern Turkey in British India\,” by Dr. Bahar Izmir. The talk will take place on Thursday May 30\, 2024 at 7 pm UK Time. \nThe Image of Modern Turkey in British India \nIn the historical course of relations between Indian Muslims and the Ottoman Empire\, the institution of the Khilafat was the centre of the interactions for years. After the abolition of Khilafat on March 3\, 1924\, the impact of Pan-Islam started to decrease\, thus in this period\, whereas Turkey was transformed into a modern state\, the independence movement in India went into an important advance. Alongside the criticism against the abolition of the Caliphate\, there was also a rising interest in independent Turkey’s steps\, domestic and foreign policies\, and its leadership among nationalists of India. During this period\, different motivations began to shape the relations established between India and Turkey. Indeed\, the ideological dimension of the bilateral relations between the two countries was generally constructed on the base of a common rhetoric of “National Movement”. The lecture claims that Turkey’s transition to a modern state and reforms of Ataturk Period has a profound impact on Indian Nationalists. The lecture also aims to evaluate the profound impact of Turkish Revolution on Indian Nationalist Movement in the light of Indian archival sources\, newspapers and correspondence of the time. \nBahar Izmir\, an academician and historian specializing in Modern Turkish History and India. She works in Ankara University\, the Institute of Turkish Revolution History as Assistant Professor. She was graduated from Middle East Technical University in 2012. During the research phase of her doctoral thesis\, she conducted archival research in India for a year and worked as a research fellow at Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi for a year. She has prominent publications\, including book chapters and articles on modern Turkish history\, Turkish-American relations and Turkey-India relations. She gives the lecture of “Atatürk’s Principles and History of Turkish Revolution” in Ankara University. Currently\, she is a research fellow at the University of London\, Royal Halloway\, from September\, with a TUBİTAK scholarship. She is here working with Prof. Francis Robinson on a book related to Turkey and India. \nDate: Thursday 30th May 2024\nTime: 7 pm\nVenue: Yunus Emre Institute in London\, 10 Maple Street\, London\, W1T 5HA \nTraditional Turkish Refreshments will be served. \nAdmission is FREE but registration*** is ESSENTIAL via Eventbrite. \n\n\n\n\nThis talk forms part of the Young Scholar Seminar Series organised by Yunus Emre Institute in London.
