SUMMARY:Book Signing & Talk: Matthew Teller: Daybreak in Gaza
DESCRIPTION:[vc_btn title=”Click Here to Register” color=”sky” size=”lg” align=”left” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fmatthewteller.eventbrite.co.uk|title:Click%20Here%20to%20Register|target:_blank”] \n\n\nBook Signing & Talk: Matthew Teller | Daybreak in Gaza : Stories of Palestinian Lives and Culture \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us at Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London on 13th February 2025\, at 7 PM\, for a deeply engaging evening exploring the resilience and culture of Palestinian lives through the lens of the remarkable book\, “Daybreak in Gaza: Stories of Palestinian Lives and Culture\,” co-edited by Mahmoud Muna and Matthew Teller. This event is proudly organised in collaboration with Saqi Books and Profile Books and will feature a talk and book signing with co-editor Matthew Teller. \n“Daybreak in Gaza\,” edited by Mahmoud Muna and Matthew Teller and featuring contributions from Juliette Touma and Jayyab Abusafia\, provides a compelling narrative of Gaza\, a place often reduced to mere statistics in global discourse. This collection offers a unique vantage into the lives of its people—artists\, acrobats\, doctors\, students\, shopkeepers\, and teachers—who narrate stories of love\, life\, loss\, and survival against the backdrop of Gaza’s rich cultural heritage and tumultuous history. \nThe book not only documents but celebrates the unyielding spirit of Gaza’s people\, showcasing the diversity of their experiences and the richness of their cultural expressions. This record serves as a powerful testament to their indomitable spirit and a resistance to the erasure of their cultural identity. \nThe evening will consist of a panel discussion with co-editor Matthew Teller providing insights into the process of compiling these stories and the importance of preserving such narratives in the face of adversity. A question and answer session will follow\, offering attendees the opportunity to delve deeper into the themes of the book. \nFollowing the discussion\, there will be a book signing session with Matthew Teller. Additionally\, copies of Teller’s “Nine Quarters of Jerusalem” will also be available for purchase\, provided in collaboration with Profile Books. \nThis event offers a unique opportunity for anyone interested in understanding more about the Middle Eastern cultural landscape and the enduring human spirit in the face of challenges. \nThis talk forms part of the Arts & Culture Lecture Series organised by Yunus Emre Institute London since 2017. \nFor more information on the event\, please email us at londra@yee.org.tr\n \nIMPORTANT NOTES \nPlease note that this event is first come first served and may be overbooked. SUMMARY:Young Scholar: Waterways and Cities
DESCRIPTION:Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London is delighted to announce its upcoming Young Scholar Seminar Series talk: “Waterways and Cities: A Computational Approach to the Built Environment\,” by Merve Okkali Alsavada. \nDate: Thursday 27th February 2025\nTime: 7 pm\nVenue: Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London\, 10 Maple Street\, London\, W1T 5HA \nWaterways and Cities: A Computational Approach to the Built Environment \nIn this insightful session\, Merve will explore the dynamic relationship between waterways and urban development through a computational and data-driven lens. \nWaterways have long been crucial in shaping cities\, influencing trade\, transport\, and human interaction. However\, as cities have evolved\, the relationship between urban centres\, industrial zones\, and ports has shifted. This talk delves into how canals and waterways in cities across the UK and the Netherlands have shaped their urban fabric. Using computational methods and urban network modelling\, Merve’s research uncovers the hidden structures that link waterways to the transformation of cities over time. \nThis is a must-attend event for architects\, urban planners\, researchers\, and anyone interested in the intersection of technology\, space\, and the built environment. \nMerve Okkali Alsavada is an architect and PhD researcher in the Space Syntax Lab at The Bartlett School of Architecture\, UCL\, where she is also a Post-Graduate Teaching Assistant. Her research explores computational and data-driven approaches to analysing cities\, focusing on the multi-layered urban network modelling and configurational analysis. Previously\, Merve worked as an architect and research assistant in Türkiye\, tutoring Architectural Design Studios and collaborating with urban planning and computer science experts on exploring spatial dynamics of urban environments. She holds an MRes from The Bartlett and an MArch and BArch from Middle East Technical University\, Türkiye \nAdmission is FREE but registration*** is ESSENTIAL. \n\n\n\n\nThis talk forms part of the Young Scholar Seminar Series organised by Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES\nPlease note that this event is first come first served and may be overbooked. To avoid disappointment\, please arrive early and secure your seat. If you have registered but are unable to attend\, please cancel your ticket to allow others to join.
