SUMMARY:Young Scholar: Waterways and Cities
DESCRIPTION:Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London is delighted to announce its upcoming Young Scholar Seminar Series talk: “Waterways and Cities: A Computational Approach to the Built Environment\,” by Merve Okkali Alsavada. \nDate: Thursday 27th February 2025\nTime: 7 pm\nVenue: Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London\, 10 Maple Street\, London\, W1T 5HA \nWaterways and Cities: A Computational Approach to the Built Environment \nIn this insightful session\, Merve will explore the dynamic relationship between waterways and urban development through a computational and data-driven lens. \nWaterways have long been crucial in shaping cities\, influencing trade\, transport\, and human interaction. However\, as cities have evolved\, the relationship between urban centres\, industrial zones\, and ports has shifted. This talk delves into how canals and waterways in cities across the UK and the Netherlands have shaped their urban fabric. Using computational methods and urban network modelling\, Merve’s research uncovers the hidden structures that link waterways to the transformation of cities over time. \nThis is a must-attend event for architects\, urban planners\, researchers\, and anyone interested in the intersection of technology\, space\, and the built environment. \nMerve Okkali Alsavada is an architect and PhD researcher in the Space Syntax Lab at The Bartlett School of Architecture\, UCL\, where she is also a Post-Graduate Teaching Assistant. Her research explores computational and data-driven approaches to analysing cities\, focusing on the multi-layered urban network modelling and configurational analysis. Previously\, Merve worked as an architect and research assistant in Türkiye\, tutoring Architectural Design Studios and collaborating with urban planning and computer science experts on exploring spatial dynamics of urban environments. She holds an MRes from The Bartlett and an MArch and BArch from Middle East Technical University\, Türkiye \nAdmission is FREE but registration*** is ESSENTIAL. \n\n\n\n\nThis talk forms part of the Young Scholar Seminar Series organised by Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES\nPlease note that this event is first come first served and may be overbooked. To avoid disappointment\, please arrive early and secure your seat. If you have registered but are unable to attend\, please cancel your ticket to allow others to join. Thank you for your cooperation. \nPlease be advised that filming and/or photography will be taking place at the event for the purposes of archiving\, marketing\, and all other publications.
