SUMMARY:Ottoman Luminaries of Cyprus with Mustafa Kureyşi
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Arts and Culture Lecture Series\, Yunus Emre Institute is pleased to host a special lecture exploring the intellectual and learned life of Ottoman Cyprus\, a vibrant chapter of Mediterranean history often overlooked in broader narratives. \nIn this insightful talk\, researcher Mustafa Kureyşi will explore the lives and legacies of the island’s scholars\, religious figures\, poets\, calligraphers\, and political elites. The lecture situates Muslim Cypriot intellectual activity both within the local landscape of Cyprus and across the wider Ottoman world. By examining the transformations experienced during the Ottoman period and the subsequent transition to British administration\, Kureyşi will trace the shifts in institutions\, authority\, and intellectual production. \nDrawing on extensive archival and field research\, the session will reflect on vital questions of continuity and legacy. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how the island’s unique historical position shaped a distinct intellectual identity that bridged cultures and eras. \nThis event offers a valuable opportunity for historians\, students of Ottoman studies\, and anyone interested in the cultural heritage of Cyprus to explore a rich history of scholarship and leadership that continues to resonate today. \n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: Please note that photography and filming will take place during this event for archiving\, marketing\, and promotional purposes. SUMMARY:Heaven\, Earth & the Ten Thousand Things Peter Sanders | Talk & Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Arts and Culture Lecture Series\, Yunus Emre Institute London presents an evening with world-renowned photographer Peter Sanders\, whose lens has spent decades capturing the profound intersections of the spiritual and the material across the Islamic world. \nIn this talk\, Sanders introduces his seminal work\, Heaven\, Earth\, and the Ten Thousand Things: The Lives of the Muslims of China\, reflecting on his extensive travels through the diverse landscapes and soul-stirring architecture of China’s Muslim heritage. He considers how the photograph acts as more than a mere document; it is a bridge between the seen and the unseen\, where the “ten thousand things” of the physical world point toward a singular\, transcendent reality. \nRather than approaching his subjects as static monuments\, Sanders explores the living breath of Chinese Islamic culture. He discusses the unique synthesis of aesthetic traditions\, where the precision of Confucian order and the fluidity of Taoist thought meet the devotion of the Islamic faith. Through his reflections\, he opens up the process of “spiritual reportage”—the art of waiting for the moment when light and spirit align. At the heart of the talk lies a broader inquiry into the nature of sacred art: how does a photographer move beyond the surface to capture the hidden\, what happens when the visual language of the East encounters the universal values of faith\, and how can a single frame translate the weight of a thousand-year-old tradition for a modern audience? \nMoving between personal anecdote and technical mastery\, this evening offers a rare insight into the life of a traveler who has spent fifty years seeking the signs on the horizon. It is an invitation to reconsider the world not as a collection of disparate objects\, but as a unified\, radiant tapestry of the divine. \nThe talk will be followed by a book signing.
