This programme provides general instruction in Ottoman Turkish. At the beginner level, students will focus on learning the alphabet, individual letters, how letters combine, and the use of suffixes. Basic reading and writing exercises are also included. Each course follows a functional-notional syllabus, with grammar points explained in context to support practical understanding.

Prerequisites

Some background reading in modern Turkish and knowing modern Turkish grammar is required.

OR

Participants are required to hold at least a B2 level certificate in Turkish.

    • What is Ottoman Turkish? Historical development of Ottoman Turkish, Ottoman Turkish Alphabet (letters)
    • Ottoman Turkish Alphabet (hareke: elif, he, vav, ye), numbers and punctuation
    • Ottoman Turkish Alphabet (letters read with different vowels), Kef letter and consonants in Ottoman Turkish
    • Suffixes in Ottoman Turkish: Possessive suffixes, Accusative, Dative
    • Reading Printed Ottoman Turkish: Word activities
    • Reading Arabic and Persian-origin Turkish words
