Ottoman Turkish was the direct predecessor of modern Turkish spoken today in Turkey and large geography outside of Turkey that used to form a part of the Ottoman Empire. This ONLINE course will provide the students with the necessary skills to read and understand Ottoman Turkish written in the Arabo-Persian alphabet. The students participating in this course will improve their reading and understanding by working on variety of texts which may include chronics, travel books, first person narratives, newspapers, sultan orders, reference works, treatises and letters from the 19th century and early 20th century.The fundamental principles of Turkish grammar and syntax will be frequently reviewed. Another important aspect of this course is to familiarize the students with the use of dictionaries to solve problems encountered in the assigned texts.

The class requires specific knowledge of the Turkish language to the level of at least B2. Classes will be conducted in Turkish.

A digital certificate of attendance or completion certificate will be issued at the end of the course.
