Abstract:
Throughout history, human beings have sought to grasp nature’s working logic and apply acquired knowledge to architectural design since it always has been the source of inspiration, solution, and creativity. For this reason, there has been a comprehensive interrelationship between the philosophy of nature and architecture. During the early stages of human civilisation, the relationship between the philosophy of nature and architecture was shaped by primitive man’s understanding of reality. This relationship has been further developed in the twenty‐first century by establishing numerous relationships with philosophy, mathematics, biology, and several other disciplines. Architects began analysing and simulating complex natural processes after advances in computer science and applying their models in architectural design. A paradigm shift of this magnitude paved the way for new design methodologies in which computation serves as a bridge between nature and architecture.
In this talk, Melih will explain how architects have used computation to reflect their philosophy of nature in architectural design after the 1990s. The main objective is to demonstrate how different concepts of nature have been simulated through computation and employed as design methods by architects. Beyond technical details and used technologies, the focus will be on the theoretical and historical backgrounds, critical limits and working principles of architectural design models. As a result, the talk will provide an intellectual framework for explaining fundamental knowledge transfer between philosophy of nature, computation, and architecture.

About the Speaker:
Melih Kamaoğlu is an architectural theorist and historian. He is a PhD candidate and Senior Postgraduate Teaching Assistant in the Architecture and Digital Theory programme at Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London. He received his BArch in 2017, and a MArch in 2020 from Karadeniz Technical University. He worked as a research assistant at Eskişehir Technical University between 2018 and 2020. His primary research interests include architectural theory/history, computation, evolution theory and philosophy of nature.
