Whirling Dervishes: Mevlevi Sema Ceremony & Devran Dhikr | UK TOUR

Yunus Emre Institute London is excited to announce the new dates for the upcoming UK tour of the Whirling Dervishes: Mevlevi Sema Ceremony and Devran Dhikr along with two lectures & concerts on Ottoman Sufi Music which will be performed by the Istanbul Sufi Ceremonies Ensemble in London, Cambridge and Oxford between the 23rd – 26th April 2023. In light of the recent events, all the proceeds will be donated to the Türkiye Earthquake Relief Fund.

This April, experience an authentic performance of a centuries-old ritual that unites the mind, the heart, and the body through the universal language of music and movement.  Join us for the breath-taking UK tour of the symbolic and spiritual Whirling Dervish performance accompanied by traditional Turkish Sufi music by master musicians! 

The UK tour of the Whirling Dervishes by the Istanbul Sufi Ceremonies Ensemble will entail a series of events including the Mevlevi Sema Ceremony, Devran Dhikr (remembrance of God), lectures and concerts. 

The series of events will launch on the 24th of April in London at the EartH Theatre, a stylish and glorious multi-arts space. The second stage of the tour will take place on the 25th of April at West Road Concert Hall, one of Cambridge’s premiere music venues and renowned for its superb acoustic qualities and on the 26th of April, this spiritually fulfilling experience will come to an end with a final performance at Sheldonian Theatre, an architectural jewel at the heart of Oxford!

In addition to these, two lectures and concerts will be held on Mevlevi Culture and Sufi Music! The first lecture and concert will take place on the 23rd of April at 6 PM at SOAS University of London: The Department of Music and the second lecture and concert will take place on the 25th of April at 2:30 PM at the West Road Concert Hall, University of Cambridge! These unique lectures will introduce the traditional music of the Mevlevi Sufi order and will be delivered by renowned scholars. Both lectures will be accompanied by concerts by the master musicians of the Istanbul Sufi Ceremonies Ensemble and pieces from Ottoman classical music and Sufi hymns will be played.

The Whirling Dervishes: Mevlevi Sema Ceremony & Devran Dhikr organised by Yunus Emre Insitute London and the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Culture and Tourism in collaboration with TİKA: Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency, Turkish Airlines, University of Cambridge: Faculty of Music, and supported by theEartH Theatre, Sheldonian Theatre, West Road Concert Hall, Cambridge Islamic Art, Cambridge Crescent, Islam Channel, Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, Oxford Turkish Society and SOAS University of London: Department of Music aims to introduce and represent the authentic Sema ceremony in its traditional and genuine form.
