Turkish Culture Night 2023!

Another unforgettable evening of music, dances, games, Turkish cuisine and prizes took place at Yunus Emre Institute London for Turkish course students on Friday 13th January 2023!

Yunus Emre Institute London organised a “Turkish Culture Night” for the 2022-2023 Autumn term Turkish course students on Friday, 13 January 2023. Yunus Emre Institute London Turkish teachers, staff and registered Turkish course students all came together during the eventful evening.

The Turkish Education Coordinator Dr. Hadra Kübra ERKINAY TAMTAMIŞ started off with an opening speech, followed by speeches from Turkish teachers Burhan Sönmez, Sevinç Çağlar, Sevimli Yıldız, Melihat Nazım, Duygu Altıntaş and Abdullah İnan.

The evening was hosted by C1.1 student Sam Jenkins and A2.2 student Wiem Bejaoui. During the event, Turkish course students performed various performances including sketches, poems, songs, and dances! A2.1 student Brenda Taylor recited the Dede Korkut Prayer in Turkish and English, A.1.1 students Ben Archer, Donata Rogozik, Edina Molnar, Fadila Kara, Farah Zeb, Laura Coultry, Silas Adekunle, Usama Attia, Zeinab Hendawi and their teacher Sevinç Çağlar sang and enacted a famous scene from one of the most classical Turkish films “Hababam Class”, under the music brand name of the “White Butterfly”.

The evening also featured poems, which has become a  tradition and important part of the culture nights! B2.2 student Haluk Hakkı and A2.1 student Rakan Otaibi were among the few who recited Yunus Emre’s poems.

Aylya Ahmedova and Şevket Sinan Yiğit hosted the quiz: “Who am I? What Am I?” and the winner, Oscar Jannti, won a set of Dede Korkut books.

Aside from the Knowledge Contest, in which all students participated, B1.1 student Oscar Jantti played the guitar and A1.2 student Dalia Touqan sung “Ilgaz” with the other students who joined.

The evening continued with a variety of activities, one of which included Cristina Magdalena Ionita, a B1.1 Turkish language student, speaking about Turkish cuisine and Turkish coffee recipes. After a food break in which all guests were offered the opportunity to taste a wide range of Turkish foods, all who came along participated in some very enjoyable Turkish folk dances!

Turkish Culture Nights are held at the end of each semester for students who join the Turkish courses at the Institute and are a way to provide the students with some motivation and a chance to socialise before the Turkish end of term exams.
