On the 27th of July 2024, Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London hosted an unforgettable musical event, “A Midsummer Night’s Recital: Ney & Bendir,” bringing together two renowned musicians for an evening of soulful melodies and rhythmic beats. The recital featured the celebrated Ney player Murat Ferhat Yegül and Sufi musician Khaled Hakim on the Bendir/Daf. Their combined performance enchanted the audience, transporting them into the mystical world of Sufi music.
The event began with a Ney Taksim, a traditional solo improvisation, setting the mood for the Mevlevi Ayin, a Sufi ceremony. The recital then progressed with a selection of pieces showcasing the versatility of the Ney and the depth of Sufi music, with Khaled Hakim’s rhythmic accompaniment on the Bendir adding an extra layer of energy to the melodies. The performance was a true journey, offering a blend of profound and dreamlike music that touched the soul.
Earlier in the day, the Institute also hosted a Ney workshop led by Murat Ferhat Yegül. The workshop, which was free for current music course students and those participating in the Ney Workshop, provided an immersive introduction to the Ney instrument. Participants had the opportunity to learn about this essential element of Ottoman Court/Turkish Classical Music, with Yegül offering guidance to beginners and more advanced students. Neys were provided for beginners, and the instructor ensured that students had Neys in the same pitch to avoid discordance.
The event was a tremendous success, blending cultural exploration with musical learning and providing attendees with a deeper understanding of the mystical and soulful sounds of the Ney.
