Celebrating Community and Culture at the West London Turkish Festival

A wave of music, colour, and community spirit swept through Feltham on Sunday, 6 July 2025, as we took part in the 8th West London Turkish Festival at Springwest Academy. Organised by the West London Turkish Volunteers (WLT Volunteers), the festival transformed the school grounds into a vibrant meeting point of cultures — bringing thousands together to celebrate the warmth, rhythm, and richness of Turkish heritage in the heart of West London.

Running from morning to evening, the festival featured live music performances by Turkish and international artists, family-friendly stage shows, a community football tournament, and a bustling funfair with attractions for all ages. Visitors explored dozens of cultural stalls and artisan crafts, while enjoying a wide range of traditional Turkish cuisine and desserts — from gözleme and kebabs to baklava and Turkish tea.

A spiritual and cultural highlight of the day was the Sema Ceremony, performed by the Konya Metropolitan Municipality Turkish Sufi Music and Sema Ensemble, in collaboration with Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London. The ensemble offered a deeply moving performance of the Mevlevi ritual, set to the meditative tones of ney, kudüm, and ilahis. Performed open-air under the summer sky, the ritual drew a large and attentive audience, offering a moment of collective stillness and reflection amid the festival’s vibrant atmosphere.

Travelling from Konya — the heartland of Mevlevi Sufism — the ensemble is known internationally for its dedication to preserving this centuries-old spiritual tradition. Their presence at the festival introduced many visitors to the profound meaning behind the Whirling Dervishes and the teachings of Mevlânâ Jalaluddin Rūmī.

Marking its 8th edition, the West London Turkish Festival has grown from a modest local event into one of the region’s most popular community festivals — drawing families, students, artists, and cultural organisations from across London and beyond. Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London was honoured to contribute to this meaningful gathering and extends its sincere thanks to WLT Volunteers for their warm organisation and dedication to celebrating Türkiye’s rich cultural heritage.
