Represententing Türkiye at the European Short Film Festival 2025

In a vibrant celebration of continental storytelling, Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London proudly represented Türkiye at the 2025 European Short Film Festival, held on 7–8 November at the historic Regent Street Cinema.

Known as In Short, Europe, the festival was organized through a prestigious collaboration between EUNIC London, the EU Delegation to the UK, the University of Westminster, and the cinema itself. This year’s event centered on the evocative theme of “Opening Doors,” an initiative designed to foster diversity, inclusion, and cultural access by showcasing nineteen exceptional short films that spanned the geographical and emotional landscape from Romania to Scotland.

Türkiye’s contribution to this cinematic dialogue was the moving short film “Nursing Home” (Huzurevi), directed by Ahmet Toklu. Screened during the festival’s opening strand, titled “Sharing Memories,” on the evening of Friday, 7 November, the film invited the audience into a poignant exploration of the human condition. By focusing on the life of Havva, a woman navigating the dual burdens of a cancer diagnosis and personal hardship while working in a rural care home, the narrative offered a raw yet tender look at survival and resilience.

The film achieved its impact through a delicate portrayal of a single, transformative misunderstanding. When Havva misinterprets a quiet gesture from a resident, the resulting moment of unexpected clarity reveals a profound message regarding compassion and the fragility of human connection. Through this screening, the Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London successfully highlighted the depth of Turkish filmmaking within a broader European context, using the power of the short-film format to bridge cultural gaps and spark meaningful reflection among the festival’s diverse attendees.
