The air at the Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London was recently filled with melody and laughter as children stepped into the vibrant world of “Cheerful Tunes,” a creative workshop designed to ignite a passion for music in young hearts.
Led by the renowned teacher, composer, and artist Gönül Yeprem, this one-hour session served as a celebration of natural expression, bringing together music and play in their most organic forms. By combining her expertise in composition with a playful pedagogical approach, Yeprem created an environment where music became a shared language for discovery rather than a rigid lesson.
The workshop was conducted through a series of dynamic rhythm games and interactive songs that allowed young music lovers to explore the fundamentals of sound. Through clapping, movement, and singing together, the children discovered the nuances of timing and built a sense of community. The session was rooted in creative exploration, where structured musical activities blended seamlessly into free play to boost curiosity. This method ensured that the children were not just passive listeners but active participants in the creation of their own unique rhythms.
What truly set this gathering apart was its gentle, pressure-free atmosphere, which prioritized the emotional comfort of every child. Recognizing that every participant interacts with art at a different pace, the workshop embraced a “no-rush” philosophy that welcomed all forms of engagement. Some children joined the rhythmic circle immediately, while others were encouraged to listen and observe until they felt ready to participate. By creating such an inclusive and restorative space, Gönül Yeprem and the Institute successfully demonstrated how early exposure to the arts can build confidence and spark a lifelong joy for creativity.
