Yunus Emre InstituteEmbark on a captivating musical odyssey spanning continents and millennia with “From Yamato to Anatolia: A Musical Journey.” This February, delve into the rich tapestry of Anatolian (Turkish) and Yamato (Japanese) cultures, each boasting a legacy steeped in tradition and history.
Experience the fusion of Turkish folk melodies with traditional Japanese compositions as Çiğdem Borucu, a multifaceted artist renowned as a pianist, composer, sound designer, and lecturer, joins forces with the esteemed koto virtuoso Atsuko Suetomi. The evening will also feature a number of Borucu’s own compositions performed with Suetomi, including ‘The Visit’, in remembrance of the ill-fated Ertuğrul Frigate’s voyage to Japan in 1899, which was only to be caught in a storm and sink.
Together, they will play a series of enchanting compositions that will carry listeners from Yamato, an old Japanese province that came to refer to all of the country, to Anatolia, the ancient Asian peninsula in Türkiye that witnessed the rise and fall of countless civilisations.
As 2024 marks the centennial milestone of diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Japan, join us in honouring this historic occasion through an enchanting fusion of Anatolian and Yamato music. Journey through the depth of this shared heritage and resonant melodies on February 16th at St John’s Church, Waterloo.
