Applied ethnomusicology offers profound opportunities to engage with communities in ethnomusicological research, emphasizing scholarly rigor within broader societal contexts.
This lecture will explore two distinct models for working with communities to sustain music practices: as integral components of cultural ecosystems and as part of national heritage. Our speakers, Olcay Muslu and Huib Schippers, will examine the scope, methods, and goals of applied ethnomusicology, both domestically and internationally. They will also spotlight their work with the MİRAS Centre for Cultural Sustainability, where they’ve initiated music projects to support post-earthquake communities in Hatay, fostering wellbeing, community cohesion, and a renewed sense of place.
