Yunus Emre Institute London recently presented a heartfelt tribute to Rauf Denktaş, the Founding President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), through a remarkable exhibition curated by Mine Kar and Cem Kar. This intimate exhibition offered a rare, in-depth look at Denktaş’s life, leadership, and enduring legacy.
The exhibition featured 250 carefully selected photographs from Denktaş’s extensive archive of 50,000 images, paired with inspiring quotes from his books and speeches. It provided visitors with a profound perspective on the Turkish Cypriot struggle for freedom and Denktaş’s pivotal role in shaping the course of history.
On the opening day, the exhibition was graced with insightful remarks from distinguished guests. Turkish Ambassador Osman Koray Ertaş described the exhibition as “the narrative of a cause,” while TRNC London Representative Ambassador Çimen Keskin emphasized Denktaş’s lasting impact on the Turkish Cypriot community and his influence on the course of the island’s history.
This exhibition, which celebrated the leadership and courage of Rauf Denktaş, offered a unique opportunity for attendees to reflect on his significant contributions and the ongoing journey for peace and justice.
We extend our gratitude to everyone who attended and to the curators for their dedication in bringing this important exhibition to life. For more information about future events and exhibitions at Yunus Emre Institute London, please visit yeelondon.org.uk.
