Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London is excited to present the 35th edition of its Young Scholar Seminar Series, with the talk titled “AI and Islamic Studies,” featuring Dr. Tuba Nur Saraçoğlu, Assistant Professor of Islamic History at Mardin Artuklu University and a TÜBİTAK-funded Visiting Researcher at Aga Khan University – Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (AKU-ISMC) in London. AI and Islamic Studies

In this seminar, Dr. Saraçoğlu will explore the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and Islamic studies, focusing on how AI-based technologies, such as large language models (LLMs) and natural language processing (NLP), are transforming research practices in the field. With the rise of digital methods in the social sciences, AI is increasingly becoming a vital tool for textual analysis in Islamic studies. This talk will showcase selected digital projects, illustrating the potential of AI technologies in the research of Islamic history, particularly in understanding Islamic scholars’ biographies, book history, and knowledge transmission.

Dr. Saraçoğlu’s work lies at the crossroads of Islamic studies, digital humanities, and AI, offering new avenues for exploring classical Islamic texts through innovative computational methods.

Dr. Tuba Nur Saraçoğlu is an Assistant Professor of Islamic History at Mardin Artuklu University and a TÜBİTAK-funded Visiting Researcher at the Aga Khan University – Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (AKU-ISMC), in London. Her research interests include knowledge transmission, book history, and the biographies of Islamic scholars. Dr. Saraçoğlu is particularly engaged in the growing field of Islamicate Digital Humanities.

She has contributed significantly to the study of Ottoman book collections, explored network analysis of classical sīra texts, and organised training programs for Islamicate Digital Humanities. Currently, she is conducting a comparative digital study of early sīra texts at AKU-ISMC with support from TÜBİTAK.
