Yunus Emre Institute in London and Leighton House are delighted to announce another fascinating series of talks featuring notable contemporary artists, exploring the classical and traditional arts and crafts of Turkey. Through the talks, we aim to showcase Leighton House and Frederic, Lord Leighton’s travels and appreciation of Turkey and highlight the work of the Institute.
For the second talk of the series, we are joined by Soraya Syed on Thursday 25th June 2020 at 18:00 as she talks about her journey to the artistic path of Calligraphy.
Today, we can observe an increased interest in traditional Turkish-Islamic art. However much interesting facts and rituals remain unknown and unspoken about. Each talk will explore the path of a different artist, who will provide an insight into their experience and thoughts shaped by their individual area of art.

Soraya Syed is a classically trained calligrapher, artist and filmmaker of growing international renown. Born in London, Syed studied at Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design before going on to read Arabic and History of Art & Archaeology at SOAS. It was during her year abroad in Egypt that she discovered the art of Islamic calligraphy.
Her work has been exhibited and collected all over the world and she is the first Briton to receive the rarely bestowed icazetname or calligrapher’s license from Istanbul, Turkey.
Syed’s practice is a process of disciplined freedom; she enjoys the constant tension between remaining true to her classical training while exploring new possibilities. She seeks to push the boundaries of traditional Islamic calligraphy through a range of media from animation and dance to 3D holographic experimentations. She has been commissioned by the likes of Google, the British Museum and the Royal Shakespeare Company.
