Yunus Emre Institute London is thrilled to host a book signing and talk event dedicated to the historical and cultural journey through Europe with esteemed author, Monica Porter on 5 June 2024 at 6:30 PM. Adding another layer of depth to the discussion, the event will be moderated by UK Critics’ Circle Member and BBC Broadcaster Phillip Bergson.
This exclusive event will recount the exploration of Europe’s history as detailed in Monica Porter’s meticulously researched and beautifully illustrated book, “A History of Europe in 12 Cafes”.
With decades of experience as a writer and historian, Monica Porter has immersed herself in the vibrant tapestry of Europe’s cafes, tirelessly seeking out the intricate connections between these establishments and the birth of revolutionary movements that still impact our lives today. In her meticulously researched and beautifully illustrated book, “A History of Europe in 12 Cafes”, she takes us on an entertaining waltz through six centuries, nine European countries (plus America) and a wealth of historic episodes featuring some of the most intriguing and noteworthy people who ever lived. As she reveals, playing its vital part in all their stories – at times in the background, at times front and centre – is that enticing venue: the café.
The twelve venerable establishments of the book’s title – the oldest dating from 1686, the newest from 1911 – are all still in existence. And so, after learning about their fascinating historical associations, readers can experience these places for themselves, which makes the volume an ideal companion for history buffs, travellers and café-lovers alike.
The event will start with a conversation with Monica Porter, who will share her insights on the intricate connections between these cafes and the birth of revolutionary movements. This will be followed by a journey through the vibrant mosaic of Europe’s cafes, as detailed in her book.
Participation in the event is free, but attendees will have the opportunity to purchase the book at a special discount and have it signed by Monica Porter herself. Alternatively, you can bring your own copy of the book to be signed.

6:30-7:30 PM: Conversation with esteemed author Monica Porter, moderated by UK Critics’ Circle Member and BBC Broadcaster Phillip Bergson.
