KODOKUSHI Directed by Ensar Altay Turkey, 2020 Documentary, 88 minutes

“Kodokushi” provides a compelling and intimate glimpse into the growing phenomenon of isolated deaths in contemporary society. Norihito, who works at a company tasked with cleaning the homes of those who have died unnoticed, becomes profoundly impacted by the loneliness and forgotten lives he encounters daily. These experiences provoke a deep reflection on his own existence, relationships, and past choices, pushing him to grapple with profound questions about human connectivity and isolation.

Interwoven with Norihito’s introspective journey is the story of elderly Muramatsu, who finds himself increasingly disconnected from society and struggling to rediscover a meaningful reason to continue his life. Through the interlacing of these deeply personal narratives, the documentary delicately highlights the universal need for companionship, compassion, and understanding in a rapidly changing world.

This powerful documentary blends sensitive storytelling with striking cinematography, capturing the emotional and societal dimensions of solitude. “Kodokushi” invites viewers not only to witness but also to thoughtfully engage with the silent epidemic of loneliness that affects many communities globally.
