On March 7, 2025, Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London successfully hosted the second session of the Culture and Language Club, Yûnus’un Otağı. This week’s theme was “Ramadan Iftar,” providing participants with an insightful experience into the traditions and significance of iftar in Turkish culture.
The programme began with a traditional iftar meal, where participants gathered to break their fast together, experiencing the warmth and hospitality of Turkish Ramadan traditions while also having the opportunity to practise speaking Turkish. After the meal, Nazlıcan Duruk Erden delivered a lesson to students on the importance of Ramadan for Turkish people. Participants learned about traditional customs, including pre-Ramadan preparations, Ramadan drummers waking people for sahur, and the significance of sharing and generosity during this holy month. The discussion also covered the special role of iftar gatherings in fostering unity and togetherness.
Attendees had the opportunity to explore the elements of a traditional Turkish iftar table, where each dish carries symbolic meaning. The event highlighted staple foods such as dates, which are traditionally eaten to break the fast, and Ramadan pide, a cherished bread representing sharing. The session also featured the famous Turkish dessert, güllaç, known for its light texture and connection to the spirit of Ramadan.
To deepen the cultural experience, participants engaged in interactive activities, including a vocabulary matching game focusing on key Ramadan-related terms. They also discussed their personal experiences with Ramadan or similar traditions in their own cultures, fostering a meaningful exchange of ideas and perspectives.
