In this workshop, conducted by our specially trained Karagöz & Hacivat performer Ada Burke, students will be introduced to a brief history of the traditional Turkish shadow play.
During the 2-hour workshop, each participant will build their own Karagöz & Hacivat puppets. They will first draw and paint the figures with acetate films before assembling the pieces with fishlines and rods to create the puppets from scratch. Once they finish assembling the puppets, participants will have the opportunity to test and use them on the shadow play stage.
This workshop assists young learners in developing their confidence as well as their creativity, dexterity, oracy, and decision-making abilities. It allows families to spend quality time together, bonding and getting to know one another better by participating in a hands-on, creative and enjoyable session.
Assessment / Outcome
By participating in our Karagöz & Hacivat Puppet-Making Workshop, each participant will receive a deeper understanding of Turkish culture and the traditional art of shadow puppetry. You will have the opportunity to unleash your creativity by crafting and taking home your personalized Karagöz & Hacivat puppet. As a result, you’ll leave with lasting memories of a unique cultural experience and a cherished handmade keepsake, all while allowing families to spend quality time together.
Methods of Teaching
Our Karagöz & Hacivat performer Ada Burke will focus on the century’s old performance conventions from Turkish shadow play tradition. In the first half of the workshop, students will be introduced to a brief history of Turkish shadow play and observe some puppets from Karagöz & Hacivat plays. The students will be given acetate films to draw and paint their own Karagöz & Hacivat figures. Then, by the help of fishlines and rods, they will create their own puppets.
